System Architecture
There is Internet Service Provider (ISP) with domain
ISPDOMAIN.COM. At this domain are accounts:
NAME1@ISPDOMAIN.COM
NAME2@ISPDOMAIN.COM
and one ALIAS
NAME3=NAME1
You have office local network (LAN) with three users and Merak
Mail Server. Merak Mail Server is connected to the Internet and to the LAN.
Connection to the Internet can be fixed or dial-up (through modem).
Each LAN user has on Merak Mail Server his own account, there
are three accounts:
NAME1@ISPDOMAIN.COM
NAME2@ISPDOMAIN.COM
NAME3@ISPDOMAIN.COM
One more account is used for receiving of the mails for
“unknown” users:
UNKNOWN@ANYDOMAIN.COM
Each user wants to read own mail from Merak Mail Server and
send emails to the others in LAN and in Internet.
How to Configure Merak Mail Server
You have to create the same domain as is used by your ISP at
your own Merak Mail Server and to create account for each user. Do not worry, it
will not “conflict” with the ISP domain, since yours one is at LAN. We have
domain ISPDOMAIN.COM in our example.
If your NAME1@ISPDOMAIN.COM will send an email to the
NAME3@ISPDOMAIN.COM, it will be send directly to him through LAN, without going
through the Internet. However if the recipient will be NAME4@ISPDOMAIN.COM or to
the any other email address, which is not defined at the office Merak Mail
Server – email will be delivered to the recipient through the Internet.
If somebody will send an email to the NAME1, NAME2 or NAME3
user from the Internet, it will be delivered to the ISP Server to the mailboxes:
NAME1 to the NAME1
NAME2 to the NAME2
NAME3 to the NAME1
(NAME3 is alias to the NAME1)
The mails will remain on ISP Server, until are not downloaded
from ISP Mail Server to the office Merak Mail Server.
To achieve that you need to set the REMORE ACCOUNTS at your
(office) Merak Mail Server.
The first remote account will read all mails from ISP mailbox
NAME1 – (emails coming to the NAME1 and NAME2). If you will use options as on
screenshot above, mails from ISP email server will be delivered to the right
mailboxes at your office Merak Mail Server.
MAIL1 to the user MAIL1
MAIL3 to the user MAIL3
For detailed explanation of the options at Remote Accounts
screen, see Merak User Manual (Merak.pdf in /Program Files/Merak/).
Notice, that there have to be entered address Forward To:
unknown@anydomain.com
To this address will be delivered email, if for any reason will
be Merak Mail Server not able recognize, who is email recipient. In can
happened, if you forget to define user address at your Merak Mail Server.
The next important parameter is – how often will Merak Mail Server read the
mailboxes from ISP Mail Server. You can set this parameter if you will click on
button Schedule.
To read emails from ISP box NAME2 you have to set the next
Remote Account – just for NAME2.
Conclusion
Merak Mail Server has very flexible architecture. If can work
in your office LAN as an communication server for sending/receiving mails over
the LAN or Internet. It can collect mails from ISP mailboxes using POP3 protocol
and distribute them to the right users at LAN. Collection can be done in pre-set
days and times, it is very important for small offices with the dial-up
connection.
